Choosing the correct lubricant

In the past, the lubrication requirements for a specific application could be satisfied by using general-purpose lubricants. Lubricant selection was typically based on experience and knowledge. Today, this approach is no longer viable due to the requirements of the current demanding environments to run faster, longer and hotter. Today's lubricants must satisfy extreme requirements that are specific to each application.



Before the proper lubricant can be selected, the conditions must be identified. This includes:

  • Outdoor- or indoor operation
  • Low and high-temperature viscosity performance
  • Decreased evaporative loss
  • Reduced friction and reduced wear
  • Improved efficiency
  • Chemical stability and resistance to elastomers
  • Extended drain intervals
  • Special requirements such as H1 registration
  • Cost

Once these system parameters are identified, the lubrication engineer (or tribo-engineer) can utilize different lubricant chemistries to select a lubricant that will optimize the performance of the application. Because each chemistry has advantages and disadvantages, it is important to choose the appropriate one to address each of the tribological system parameters.

Where possible, FRAGOL designs it’s formulations in such way that it does not encounter classification. Therefore, safety data sheets are not mandatory and do no longer need to cover all languages of the member states where the product is sold. A so-called “voluntary” MSDS in the English language is sufficient. In addition, the registration at local poison centers in the various member states is not needed for non-classified products.

This will cut cost and prevents a lot of hassle for the private label user.
